MONACO — Lima, Peru, will host the 130th International Olympic Committee session in 2017, when the host for the 2024 Games will be announced.
The IOC general assembly picked the South American city over Helsinki on Tuesday, by 54 votes to 30.
Contenders for the 2024 Olympics must submit their candidacies by Sept. 15, 2015, starting a preliminary application phase that will run through April or May 2016. The formal "candidate city" phase will continue until the selection of the host in 2017.
It will be the third time since 2013 that an IOC session is held in South America.
