Rio 2016 concludes on Sunday, but there are still five Canadian athletes competing on Day 16.
Canada earned its 22nd medal of the Olympic Games Saturday after Catharine Pendrel won bronze in mountain biking. They have a chance to add to that tally in men’s wrestling, men’s mountain biking and the men’s marathon.
Here are the Canadians to watch on Day 16.
Men’s mountain bike (cross-country)
Two more Canadians will take part in men’s cross-country as the final begins at 11:30 a.m. ET. Raphael Gagne (Quebec City, Que.) will start in the fourth line in the 30th position and Leandre Bouchard (Alma, Que.) will begin in fifth line at 36th.
Gagne won gold at the 2015 Pan Am Games last summer, so he will be looking to build on his triumph in Toronto.
Men’s marathon
The final of the men’s marathon starts at 8:30 a.m. ET with Eric Gillis and Reid Coolsaet participating in the event. There are 155 athletes competing, although both Gillis and Coolsaet have done relatively well. The former finished 24th at the 2012 Games, while the latter was 27th.
Men’s wrestling
Canada’s Haislan Garcia will battle Russia’s Soslan Ramonov in the 65kg freestyle qualifications at 7:30 a.m. ET. The Cuban-born Garcia would have to beat Ramonov, then advance past the round of 16 and quarter-finals to compete for a medal.
The 33-year-old made it to the quarter-finals at London 2012 before losing to the eventual champion Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu. He also won a bronze medal at the 2015 Pan Am Games.
