DARMSTADT, Germany — Struggling Bundesliga side Darmstadt has signed World Cup winner Kevin Grosskreutz for next season, just over a month after he was released by second-division Stuttgart.

Darmstadt, bottom of the Bundesliga and likely to be playing second-division football next season, says the 28-year-old Grosskreutz has signed a deal through June 2019.

Grosskreutz had his Stuttgart contract terminated by mutual consent on March 3 following his involvement in a late-night fight between two groups that left him hospitalized.

The right back’s best days so far came at Borussia Dortmund, winning Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012 and the German Cup.

Grosskreutz was an unused substitute for Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning team in Brazil. He moved to Galatasaray in 2015 and joined Stuttgart in January 2016.
