It appears William Lagesson may have confused the rink for an octagon.
The AHL suspended the Grand Rapids Griffins defenceman for three games on Tuesday after he attempted a chokehold on Iowa Wild forward Adam Raska in a game on Sunday.
After a few seconds in the tie-up, Raska tapped out.
Lagesson, the 28-year-old Swede who spent last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks organizations, was assessed a roughing minor on the play.
He'll miss games Friday vs. Milwaukee, Saturday at Chicago and Sunday vs. Cleveland.
The Griffins are the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, but Lagesson has yet to make an appearance for the big-league club.
In over 100 career NHL games with the Ducks, Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers, he's yet to score but has recorded 11 assists and 54 penalty minutes.
