The Chicago Blackhawks gave forward Max Domi a birthday gift by trading him to the playoff-bound Dallas Stars.
In exchange, the Stars are trading a second-round pick in 2025 and goaltender Anton Khudobin to the Blackhawks. AHL goaltender Dylan Wells will also head to Dallas in the trade.
“We’re excited to add a player of Max’s calibre to our lineup,” said Stars general manager Jim Nill. “His offence this season speaks for itself, but he’ll also provide energy, grit and a veteran presence as we continue our push to the post-season.”
The Stars were visiting the Blackhawks Thursday night and won the game 5-2. Domi was scratched for “trade-related reasons” but the last time they played each other, on Feb. 22, Domi had two goals and an assist in a 4-3 Chicago win.
Domi, who turned 28 on Thursday, joined the Blackhawks as an unrestricted free agent last summer signing a one-year, $3 million contract. The 27-year-old from Toronto is in the midst of a bounce-back season with 18 goals and 49 points — his best totals since putting up 72 points with the Montreal Canadiens in 2018-19.
Domi was drafted 12th overall by Arizona in 2013 and has 119 goals and 363 points in 561 games over nine seasons with the Coyotes, Canadiens, Columbus Blue Jackets, Carolina Hurricanes and Blackhawks.
Chicago is last in the Western Conference with a 21-34-5 record. The Stars enter play Thursday first in the Central Division with a 32-16-13 record.
