Brian Burke named executive director of pro women’s hockey players’ union

Brian Burke is unveiled to be the executive director of the PWHL's players association and discusses the core values of the league, how the PWHL has spots for all players that can make it better, and how he looks forward to growing the league.

Former NHL general manager Brian Burke has been named the executive director of the union that represents professional women’s hockey players.

The announcement was made as part of a wider unveiling of the new Professional Women’s Hockey League during a media conference on Tuesday.

Burke will lead the union — renamed the PWHL Players’ Association — that will represent players competing for the six teams in the new league.

The new league was formed after the Professional Women’s Hockey Players’ Association — backed by an investment group that includes Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter and retired tennis great Billie Jean King — purchased the Premier Hockey Federation earlier this year. Shortly after that, players negotiated and ratified an eight-year collective bargaining agreement.
