The Washington Capitals traded power forward Anthony Mantha to the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday for a second-round draft pick pick in 2024 and a fourth-round pick in 2026.
Washington will also retain 50 per cent of Mantha’s salary as part of the trade.
The Capitals now own 23 total picks over the next three NHL drafts.
The six-foot-five, 234-pound Mantha, 29, is on pace to have one of his most productive seasons since joining the NHL in 2016. He has 20 goals and 14 assists for 34 points in 56 games.
Mantha is a rental as he’s in the final year of a four-year, $22.8-million deal he originally signed with the Detroit Red Wings. The Capitals are seven points out of a playoff spot.
A healthy scratch at times last year, Mantha was acquired by Washington in a deal with Detroit in April 2021.
A 120-point scorer in his final season of junior with Val d’Or when he was named CHL player of the year, Mantha was selected in the first round (20th overall) by the Red Wings in the 2013 NHL Draft.
Mantha joins a Knights team that has had some key injuries at forward. Jack Eichel just came off long-term injured reserve, but Mark Stone was recently added to LTIR.
The defending Cup champion Knights were clinging to third in the Pacific Division heading into Tuesday night’s action.
