The Carolina Hurricanes are working on a deal that could keep Jaccob Slavin with the team for the long term, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Wednesday.

Slavin, 30, wrapped up the penultimate season of his seven-year deal in 2023-24, nabbing seven goals and 36 points through 81 games this season.

The American blue-liner is eligible to sign a contract extension on July 1, with the state of his deal expected to shape the off-season plans of GM Eric Tulsky in his first summer on the job.

With the likes of pending UFAs Jake Guentzel, Jordan Martinook, Stefan Noesen, Teuvo Teravainen, Jalen Chatfield, Tony DeAngelo, Brett Pesce and Brady Skjei, Tulsky will have a lot on his plate and just as many decisions to make on how his team will look come the fall.

Understanding what the financial future looks like for Carolina’s lead man on the backend in Slavin will help provide the GM with more clarity on what pieces the team can afford and for how long.

Seth Jarvis, Jack Drury and Martin Nečas will also become RFA’s on July 1, adding to the busy off-season that looms for Carolina and its front office.

Slavin led the Hurricanes in ice time during their post-season run in 2024, posting a goal and three points while mending the group’s top unit before their elimination in the second round.
