Maple Leafs parting ways with goalie coach Steve Briere after seven seasons

The Toronto Maple Leafs are parting ways with goaltending coach Steve Briere after seven seasons with the club, Sportsnet can confirm.

Briere’s contract is set to expire on June 30. In his time with Toronto, he helped Frederik Andersen and Jack Campbell reach the NHL All-Star Game.

Briere was hired by the Leafs in 2015 after spending time as a goaltending instructor and coach with several junior teams.

The move comes with Campbell set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 13 and Petr Mrazek under contract for two more years at $3.8 million.

Campbell had a strong start to the season going 21-6-3 with a 2.30 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage in 33 games before the All-Star Game. Campbell’s play then dropped off in the second half of the season as he had a 3.28 goals-against average and a .894 save percentage while also dealing with a rib injury.

In his first season with the Leafs, Mrazek struggled with injuries and was put on waivers after going 12-6-0 with a 3.34 goals-against average and a .888 save percentage through 20 games. Erik Källgren was also called up with the Leafs dealing with injuries to Campbell and Mrazek and went 8-4-1 with a 3.31 goals-against average and .888 save percentage in 14 games.
