MLB Roundup: Corbin Burnes recovers from heat scare, strikes out 13 as Brewers edge Reds

Corbin Burnes pitched a solid six innings while Victor Caratini singled in a run in the seventh to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 1-0.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Corbin Burnes struck out the side in the sixth inning after nearly collapsing in the fifth in oppressive humidity, Victor Caratini singled in a run in the seventh and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Cincinnati Reds 1-0 on Friday night.

After his 10th strikeout, Burnes squatted behind the mound with his head lowered as teammates and trainers rushed over. Burnes took several big gulps of water and spoke to the training staff. He took a couple of warmup pitches, then retired Matt McLain on an infield pop to end the inning.

The game-time temperature was 91 degrees with the high humidity. Burnes (8-5) struck out 13 in six innings. He allowed only two hits and two walks to help the Brewers tie the Reds atop the NL Central standings.

Devin Williams closed for his 21st save.

Cincinnati starter Graham Ashcraft (5-6) allowed three hits through six innings.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jonah Heim homered and drove in four runs, Corey Seager and Adolis Garcia also homered, and Texas rallied past Cleveland, which got a history-making pair of homers from Bo and Josh Naylor.

The Naylors became the first brothers in major league history to hit multi-run homers in the same inning for the same team when each hit a two-run shot in the third to put the Guardians ahead 4-0. That was the lone highlight for Cleveland.

Nathaniel Lowe homered in the fourth as part of a 4-for-4 night. The Rangers scored two runs in that inning, one in the sixth, five in the seventh and four in the eighth.

Heim finished 3-for-5 and fell a triple short of the cycle. Garcia drove in three runs and scored three in a 3-for-5 night.

Brock Burke (3-2), the first of three Rangers relievers, earned the win. Sam Hentges (1-1) took the loss.

[brightcove videoID=6331232645112 playerID=JCdte3tMv height=360 width=640]

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani allowed four earned runs on five hits and left the mound in the sixth inning shortly before Mauricio Dubon’s tiebreaking two-run single in Houston’s victory over Los Angeles.

Ohtani (7-5) was pulled after he walked Corey Julks to open the sixth, consulting with the Angels’ training staff before his exit. The Angels didn’t say whether Ohtani’s pitching hand was injured, but the two-way superstar’s final start before the All-Star break ended because of a finger blister, and he also dealt with a cracked fingernail last month.

Ohtani, who struck out seven, stayed in the game as a hitter and delivered two singles at the plate, but his spiraling Angels have lost a season-high six straight and 10 of 11.

Ryan Pressly fanned Ohtani while striking out the side in the ninth for his 21st save. Phil Maton (2-2) got two outs for the win.

Mickey Moniak had three hits and Taylor Ward homered for the Angels.
