Despite receiving a “best-case scenario” from his last examination, Alphonso Davies will remain out for up to four more weeks, according to Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann.
“Phonzy will still be out for two, three to around four weeks,” Nagelsmann said (via ESPN’s Derek Rae) after Bayern’s 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim on Saturday. “The exam he underwent has shown that the best-case scenario occurred and the fluid has disappeared from his heart muscle. We’re happy about that and hope he’ll be back soon.
“He will be allowed to be pushed only on a moderate basis come his first week back & will then be examined again. But everything is looking good.”
Davies was diagnosed with mild myocarditis – an inflammation of the heart muscle – on Jan. 14. He has not played a competitive match since mid-December when the Bundesliga paused for their annual winter break.
The latest update likely rules out Davies for Canada’s final World Cup qualifiers from March 24-30. Canada will face Costa Rica, Jamaica and Panama to close out the Concacaf cycle.
The Canadians remain undefeated atop the table and could qualify automatically for the World Cup as early as the Costa Rica match on March 24.
