Two of Canada’s best bets for gold have a chance to add to the country’s medal count on Day 3 of the Olympics.

Here are five events to watch, along with the full schedule (all times Eastern):

Summer McIntosh (5 a.m. heats, 2:30 p.m. final)

Coming off a silver in the 400-metre freestyle on opening day, McIntosh returns to the pool for the 400-m individual medley — an event she set the world record in earlier this year at the Canadian swim trials.

Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Rylan Wiens (5 a.m. final)

The divers became the first Canadians to win a medal in the men’s 10-metre synchro event at the world championships when they won bronze in 2022. They also have silver at the Commonwealth Games and Pan American Games on their resumes.

Christa Deguchi (first fight 5:12 a.m., medal fights 10:48 a.m.)

The judoka beat out fellow Canadian Jessica Klimkait in a fierce battle for the country’s lone Olympic spot in the women’s 57-kg event — the latter won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics. Deguchi captured silver at this year’s world championships and gold at last year’s worlds. The top-seeded Deguchi gets a bye to the round of 16, which starts at 5:12 a.m. Medal matches start at 10:48 a.m.

Novak Djokovic vs. Rafael Nadal (no earlier than 7:30 a.m.)

The two legends clash in a second-round contest, their first head-to-head duel before a quarterfinal in a traditional tennis tournament. Serbia’s Djokovic leads the way with 24 Grand Slam titles, but Spain’s Nadal has a record 14 championships on the same Roland Garros clay where the Olympics are being played.

Canadian women’s basketball team (11:15 a.m., vs. France)

After finishing a program-best fourth at the 2022 World Cup, Canada barely qualified for the Olympics, needing help from other teams to get one of the last spots earlier this year. We’ll see if the Canadians can rediscover their top form starting with their opener against host France at 11:15 a.m.
