New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba is being recognized for his leadership by another iconic leader in that franchise’s history.

The NHL announced Tuesday that Trouba has been awarded the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award for the 2023-24 season.

The award is presented annually to “to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice, during the regular season and who plays a leading role in his community growing the game of hockey.”

The winner is selected by Messier from a list of candidates complied by members of the NHL and its various teams.

Trouba, in his second season as captain, helped the Rangers to a franchise-record 55 wins and 114 points to capture the Predisdents’ Trophy.

Trouba had 22 points in 69 games this season and was 12th in the NHL with 183 blocked shots.

Away from the ice, Trouba participated in the annual Rangers Youth Hockey Camp and is involved with The Garden of Dreams Foundation. This season, prints of his original artwork — created by wearing full hockey gear, covering himself in paint and body-checking a giant canvas — were sold, with $100,000 benefitting The Garden of Dreams Foundation.
