The Ottawa Senators might have three goaltenders to start next season, according to Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek.
Speaking during Saturday night’s 32 Thoughts segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Marek revealed that Senators general manager Pierre Dorion is considering the option.
“He [Dorion] said it’s a strong possibility that’s, at least, what they start with next season,” Marek said. “I know it’s a possibility that no one likes, but that’s where Ottawa’s at right now.”
Following nagging injuries and a rough start to the season for Matt Murray, Anton Forsberg became the starting netminder for the Senators, posting a .917 save percentage through 46 games last season. Murray was able to come back to the NHL down the stretch, but suffered a concussion that sidelined him for the remainder of the season. He is expected to be available for the Senators at training camp.
Belleville Senators goaltender Filip Gustavsson is entering the second year of his deal, where his contract becomes one-way. If the Senators choose to start the season with three goaltenders, Gustavsson will be battling Forsberg and Murray for a spot between the pipes.
