Sharks’ Karlsson becomes first NHL defenceman to record 100-point season since 1992

Watch as Erik Karlsson scores on the wrist shot to become the first defenceman since Brian Leetch in 1991-1992 to record 100 points in an NHL season.

San Jose Sharks defenceman Erik Karlsson joined a select club on Monday night.

The Swedish blue liner notched his 100th point of the season as the Sharks took on the Winnipeg Jets at Canada Life Centre. Karlsson became the first defenceman to complete the feat since the soon to be inducted Hockey Hall of Famer Brian Leetch (102 points) in 1991-92.

The 32-year-old is one of only six NHL defencemen to have scored 100 or more points in a single season.

In addition to Karlson and Leetch, four other defencemen pulled the feat.

Paul Coffey reached the milestone a record five times (138 points in 1985-86, 126 points in 1983-84, 121 points in 1984-85, 113 points in 1988-89 and 103 points in 1989-90)

Bobby Orr is the only other blue-liner with multiple 100-plus point seasons (135 points in 1974-75, 122 points in 1973-74 and 101 points in 1972-73).

Al MacInnis (103 points in 1990-91) and Denis Potvin (101 points in 1978-79) a complete the club of select few to have crossed the 100-point mark.
