The Sudbury Wolves confirmed star forward Quentin Musty has left the team, but they’re not about to trade the San Jose Sharks first-round pick unless they get a good return.
The Wolves released a statement Monday after Musty did not stay with the OHL team following the Sharks’ decision to send the native of Hamburg, N.Y. back to junior.
“It is unfortunate that he has taken this position, as the areas of his game needing further development to become an NHL player are the exact areas our new coaching staff has been focused on throughout the summer,” the Wolves said.
“… Our priority remains building and developing a strong and competitive team. If a deal arises that significantly improves our team, we will consider it. Until then, Quentin remains an important part of the Sudbury Wolves, and he is welcome to join the team at any time.”
Musty led the OHL in points-per-game last season, finishing with 102 points (43 goals, 59 assists) in 53 games.
The Sharks took Musty, 19, in the first round (26th overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft.
Musty was the first-overall pick by the Wolves in the 2021 OHL Draft.
The Wolves, under new coach Scott Barney, are 2-2 early in the season.
Musty isn’t the first high-profiler OHLer that has looked for a move early this season. Winnipeg Jets first-rounder Colby Barlow wanted a move from the Owen Sound Attack and was shipped to the Oshawa Generals upon his return to junior.
