The Washington Capitals put pen to paper with 2023 NHL Draft pick Cam Allen on Saturday, inking the blueliner to a three-year entry-level deal, the team announced.

Washington took Allen with the 136th overall pick in last year’s draft after a productive campaign with the Guelph Storm in the Ontario Hockey League. Allen ranked third among the Storm’s defencemen in points during the leadup to him being selected by the Capitals.

An injury sidelined Allen for most of his 2023-24 campaign with the Storm, limiting him to just 25 games and nine points. The Toronto, Ont. native also represented Canada at the 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where he finished the tournament tied for the lead in assists while helping Canada land a gold medal along with fellow 2023 Capitals’ draft pick Andrew Cristall.

Allen also captained Canada at the 2023 Under-18 World Championship, recording four assists as the Canadians won the bronze medal. He was ranked 12th among North American defencemen and 46th among all North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting in 2023.
