Denis Shapovalov is proving that patience is a virtue.
On Thursday, the 25-year-old advanced to the quarterfinals of the Mubadala City DC Open in Washington with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Serbia's Miomir Kecmanović.
It's his first quarterfinal since January 2023.
Despite losing the first set, the Richmond Hill, Ont., native battled back in the intense heat, which reached 37 C.
In his comeback win, Shapovalov delivered eight aces and won 81 per cent on first serve while converting four of seven break points.
In the next round, Shapovalov will play the winner of an all-American matchup between Brandon Nakashima and Ben Shelton.
