Denis Shapovalov upsets Tsitsipas, Leylah Fernandez advances

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov upset No. 10 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of the Miami Open on Saturday.

Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ont., entered the ATP Masters 1000 event with a record of 2-7 in main draws this year.

The Canadian missed the second half of 2023 with a knee injury and his ranking has dropped to No. 126.

Shapovalov will next face Matteo Arnaldi of Italy on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Canadian Leylah Fernandez won her opening singles match at the Miami Open.

Fernandez, of Laval, Que., dispatched Colombia’s Emiliana Arango 6-4, 6-2. The two were slated to play Friday but rain and wind suspended play before the two could get on to the court.

The 31st-seeded Fernandez, who had a first-round bye, had no aces and four double faults while winning 70 per cent of her first serves. But she was especially effective in breaking her opponent, converting on all six chances she got in the match.

The Canadian draws No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula of Buffalo in the third round on Sunday.

Later Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime lost 6-2, 6-4 against fourth-seeded German Alexander Zverev in a second-round match.
