The 2022 Formula One season has wrapped up but teams have already started fitting seats with their new drivers for next year with one final post-season test set to take place Tuesday.
Unlike other sports where free agency drags out through the off-season, once four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel announced back in July his retirement plans, "silly season" was underway.
We've gone over the news and reports leading up to the grid being finalized, now here's a rundown of all 10 teams and their lineups for 2023.
2022 Lineup: Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu
2023 Lineup: No changes
Analysis: The Sauber-backed squad jumped three spots in the constructors' championship this season thanks to the arrival of Bottas from Mercedes. His season-best P5 finish at Imola even helped them secure additional prize money as it proved to be the tiebreaker over Aston Martin for sixth place. They'll need the extra cash as Alfa Romeo still has a lot of work to do with regard to consistency as both drivers went through long stretches without scoring any points.
2022 Lineup: Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly
2023 Lineup: Yuki Tsunoda and Nyck de Vries
Analysis: Although Red Bull set the gold standard in 2022, none of that trickled down to its second team. AlphaTauri essentially swapped places with Alfa Romeo in the standings dropping from sixth in 2021 to ninth this year. Considering Gasly has been stuck with the B-team since he was demoted in 2019 and they've been spinning their tires figuratively, it wasn't shocking to see him move on.
De Vries has been waiting in the wings as Mercedes' reserve driver and now Red Bull has given him wings. The 27-year-old Dutch driver proved he can hang at this level filling in for Williams driver Alex Albon at Monza and finishing ninth to score two points. He might be the only rookie next year to outscore his teammate.
2022 Lineup: Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso
2023 Lineup: Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly
Analysis: Of all the drivers switching seats, Gasly makes the biggest jump and expectations will be high for him to deliver. The big question is can Ocon and Gasly get along? The two have raced against each other since they were kids and when Bieber haircuts were a thing. Whether they're friends or enemies, or maybe frenemies, will make for an interesting dynamic — and by interesting I mean I can't wait for their episode of Drive to Survive.
2022 Lineup: Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel
2023 Lineup: Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso
Analysis: Aston Martin made a splash by replacing the retiring Vettel with another former multi-time world champion by signing Alonso to a multi-year deal. Alonso finished a surprising ninth with Alpine even though he struggled with mechanical issues all year long. The 41-year-old Spaniard should have fewer DNFs with Aston Martin but as we saw with Vettel, it could be a challenging tenure farther back from the pack. Alonso may also end up wrestling with teammate Stroll for the final points-paying positions.
2022 Lineup: Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz
2023 Lineup: No changes
Analysis: Driver talent was never a question for Ferrari, it's their mechanical issues and communication that were problematic during an up-and-down 2022 campaign. When they got it right, they were victorious but when they got it wrong it was face-palm frustrating. Ferrari stands the best chance of challenging Red Bull for both titles and in the interest of exciting and entertaining races, it's for the best they figure things out.
2022 Lineup: Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher
2023 Lineup: Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg
Analysis: Within a couple of seasons, Haas has gone from having two rookies (Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin in 2021) to two veterans. Magnussen made his return to the grid this year following a brief hiatus and now Haas has added Hülkenberg, who has been without a full-time ride since 2019. Hülkenberg was a consistent points-scorer during a six-year run where he finished within the top 10 of the drivers' championship and that seems to be what Haas is aiming for rather than continuing to rebuild.
2022 Lineup: Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo
2023 Lineup: Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri
Analysis: Although Ricciardo was signed for another season, it was clear things hadn't worked out as expected. Ricciardo was also consistently outperformed by the younger Norris, who is now the team's de facto No. 1 driver. McLaren scooped up Alpine's star prospect Piastri. The 21-year-old Australian looks ready to make the leap to the big leagues having fast-tracked through the junior ranks winning the F3 championship in 2020 and the F2 championship in 2021.
2022 Lineup: Lewis Hamilton and George Russell
2023 Lineup: No changes
Analysis: Mercedes, which won a record-extending eighth consecutive constructors' championship in 2021, took a hit this season as "porpoising" issues plagued the first half of the campaign. The German powerhouse turned things around in the second half — highlighted with Russell scoring his first-ever victory at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix and Hamilton making it a 1-2 finish — but a sub-par Abu Dhabi served as a reminder they're not out of the weeds just yet. Still, there were plenty of positives to take away and Russell and Hamilton are a dangerous duo who just need cars that aren't evil.
2022 Lineup: Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez
2023 Lineup: No changes
Analysis: Constructors' champion Red Bull will look to run it back as Verstappen also aims for a third consecutive drivers' title. The team should be in a good position to defend — as long as they don't exceed the budget cap again.
2022 Lineup: Alexander Albon and Nicholas Latifi
2023 Lineup: Alexander Albon and Logan Sargeant
Analysis: Albon contributed twice as many points as Nicholas Latifi (four compared to two is still double) but signed a multi-year agreement in August while the Canadian was sacked in favour of rookie Sargeant. Williams' decision to turf Latifi didn't come as a surprise as he only finished within the top 10 three times over three seasons and had as many points this year as de Vries, who as noted above subbed for Albon in one race.
Sargeant, 21, finished fourth in the F2 standings to secure his Super Licence and is set to become the first American on the F1 grid since Alexander Rossi in 2015. Considering Netflix's Drive to Survive sparked a surge in popularity of the sport and F1 will add a third race in the U.S. next season in Las Vegas, having an American driver on the grid will only help maintain that interest.
