22 Days of Blue Jays: Down to the home stretch

The Toronto Blue Jays caravan has hit Ontario on it's 22 Days of Blue Jays cross Canada trip.

By Erica Dymond from Regina and Winnipeg

As Team West enters Ontario, there is only one word that can describe what we’re all feeling: bittersweet.

We’re over the halfway point and on the home stretch. We’re looking forward to the province that is home of the Toronto Blue Jays and finding the fans and their stories.

The last few days, we’ve covered a lot of ground. We made a stop in Saskatoon to see a fan who found me on Twitter. He recommended Canadian Brewhouse – a chain of bars in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. We found a few fans here …

Our next Rogers location is in Regina. Randy is from Estevan, Sask., and drove the two hours into Regina with his daughter, wife and mother. Randy took the day off work and his mother had to switch an appointment just to see us. He was at the 1993 World Series and has a foam “J” to prove it.

A special delivery from the Grade 7 class at St. Mary’s in Estevan is dropped off to us with handmade cards for the Blue Jays. I promise to deliver them to the Blue Jays personally!

On our road trip to Winnipeg, we make a couple of stops…

And there’s always time for Montana’s…

Winnipeg has some of the cutest fans we have seen – and unlike some of our other spots, they aren’t Toronto transplants. These are genuine, homegrown Winnipeg residents who have fallen in love with the game and are passing it on to the next generation.

One fan watches the Jays’ games in his backyard living room. He has some vintage prints and sketches that he picked up at Value Village for $2 each. Note to self: Do not underestimate the opportunity of finds at Value Village.

It’s back on the road to Ontario.
