Blue Jays acquire Daniel Vogelbach from Mariners for cash considerations

Charlie Montoyo talks about how Daniel Vogelbach fits into the Blue Jays lineup and how the team wanted another impact bat.

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired first baseman Daniel Vogelbach from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations.

Vogelbach was designated for assignment by the Mariners after slashing .094/.250/.226, collecting a double, two home runs and four RBI in 18 games.

Toronto will need a roster spot for Vogelbach once he reports — which may not be right away, as Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith noted. But if Trent Thornton goes back on the injured list, it would open up some room.

The 27-year-old had a breakout season in 2019, hitting 30 homers and 76 RBI, which led to him earning his first All-Star Game nod.

The former top prospect had no minor-league options remaining and isn’t eligible for arbitration until 2022.
