The Toronto Blue Jays designated outfielder Anthony Alford for assignment Thursday.
Per league rules, Toronto now has seven days to work out a trade involving the 26-year-old, or place him on waivers.
Alford was formerly one of the top prospects in the Blue Jays organization but struggled at the MLB level, hitting just .155 with a .454 OPS over parts of four seasons. The former third-round draft pick can play any of the three outfield positions and is known for his speed.
Pitcher Trent Thornton was activated from the injured list to take Alford’s spot on the roster.
