Canadian pitcher John Axford underwent elbow surgery to remove bone spurs on Thursday, according to Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae.

Axford, 35, is expected to be ready in time for spring training in 2020, Mae adds.

The right-hander signed a one-year minor-league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays in March. Axford pitched just one inning in 2019, with the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays, as he continued to recover from a stress reaction in his elbow suffered during spring training.

Axford appeared in 45 games for the Blue Jays in 2018, earning a 4-1 record with a 4.41 ERA and 50 strikeouts over 51 innings.

He last pitched in a major-league game as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sept. 21, 2018.
