Blue Jays option Gurriel Jr. to triple-A Buffalo, call up Sogard

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. continues to struggle making easy plays and after botching a short throw to first base is pulled out of the game.

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays have optioned infielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to triple-A Buffalo and selected infielder Eric Sogard to the active roster.

Gurriel has struggled this season, both in the field and at the plate. He is hitting just .175 this season and was taken out of Toronto’s 8-4 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday after a throwing error in the second inning.

Sogard is batting .267 with a home run and six runs batted in over nine games with Buffalo this season.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays transferred left-handed pitcher Ryan Borucki to the 60-day injured list with left elbow inflammation.

He will be eligible to be reinstated on May 27.

The announcement came before the Blue Jays kicked off a four-game road series with the Minnesota Twins on Monday.
