TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays added some badly needed pitching depth to their system by signing left-hander Felix Doubront to a minor-league deal, according to a source.
Doubront, 27, will report to triple-A Buffalo but gives the Blue Jays some options if there are struggles or injuries in their rotation. He’s expected to work out in Florida for a couple of weeks to get stretched out before joining the Bisons as a starter in mid-to-late April.
Doubront threw 160-plus innings for the Boston Red Sox in 2012 and 2013 before struggling last season, eventually getting dealt to the Chicago Cubs, who released him Saturday.
If the Blue Jays can get him back on track, they would have three years of contractual control, although he’s out of options.
