Blue Jays activate Randal Grichuk, Aledmys Diaz from DL

Blue Jays radio play-by-play voice Ben Wagner identifies a couple of positives for the club heading into June, after a doom-and-gloom entire month of May.

The Toronto Blue Jays activated outfielder Randal Grichuk and shortstop Aledmys Diaz from the disabled list, the team announced on Friday afternoon.

Outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. and right-hander Jake Petricka were optioned to triple-A Buffalo as corresponding moves.

Grichuk has been on the DL since April 30 with a sprained right knee suffered during an awkward diving catch. The 26-year-old hit .235 with two home runs in six games across three minor-league levels during a rehab stint.

Diaz was carted off the field during a May 6 contest with a severe left ankle sprain after stepping on first base as he raced to beat out a play at the bag. His absence reverberated through the roster, eventually causing the Blue Jays to go more than two weeks without a natural shortstop. Diaz, 27, played in two rehab games at double-A New Hampshire.

Both players, acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in separate off-season trades, struggled offensively with the Blue Jays before their respective injuries.
