Montreal will be putting on quite a display when it hosts the return of Major League Baseball later this month.
When the Toronto Blue Jays take on the New York Mets for a two-game exhibition series at Olympic Stadium Mar. 28-29, the late Gary Carter and the famous 1994 Montreal Expos team will be honoured in pre-game ceremonies.
Carter, who died on Feb. 16 of 2012, was one of the most popular Expos players of all-time. The 11-time all-star catcher spent several seasons in Montreal where he had a critical role in the glory years of the franchise. The Hall of Famer had his No. 8 retired by the club in 2003.
The 1994 Expos had the best record in baseball (74-40) before the remainder of year was wiped out during the strike-shortened season. The franchise never recovered after losing prominent players such as Larry Walker, Ken Hill, John Wetteland and Marquis Grissom to free agency and trades prior to the 1995 season.
Montreal lost its major league team when the franchise relocated to Washington at the end of the 2004 season.
