Hayhurst on Jays: Bautista having bad days

Jose Bautista. (CP/Nathan Denette)

Rumour is Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista is a little cranky.

He’s been spotted slamming stuff in locker rooms and from an outsider’s perspective; I will say his body language has been less than desirable. Bautista hasn’t been hitting well this spring and has been getting rung up at the plate.

The attitude is not such a big deal for the older players, but younger ones will see a superstar having a tantrum and take that as a sign that it’s okay to imitate. It’s not — especially not with Gibby as the skipper. I think J-bo is a fine human being, but he’s not above a little professional scolding. Hopefully he’ll tighten that up before the season kicks off.

Bautista has too many microscopes focused on him to put out the crybaby vibe. Not that he is, but if he slumps to start the year like he did last year coupled with some bad body language, expect unnecessary drama.

It’s freezing cold here in Clearwater. Literally. Ice crystals have been spotted in the air — this is according to some local weather man who made ice crystals sound liken to the trumpet just before the apocalypse. Anyhow, saw Doc today. Saw him; to afraid to actually talk to him. I’m media now and that’s like the snake to his mongoose. Instead I asked his trainer if he speaks to anyone on the team and he said no, “if he talks to you a lot, it probably means you’re doing something wrong.” Amen.

Ricky Romero gets a tough weather draw for today. I wonder if the cold will bother his knees. Something I’ll have to ask him the next time I get the chance. It’s strange treating him like an old man with cranky knees but this game does have a way of aging you before your time. I know the cold is affecting my hands right now. I’m having trouble hitting these keys as I type. Typically a pitcher feels fine once he gets his internal body temperature up, but I’m not a pitcher anymore and I don’t think the Jays would let me hop in their hot tub to “get loose” for the colour man gig.
