MLB Players’ Weekend was such a success in 2017 that it’s coming back for a second consecutive year. The league announced Thursday that this year’s festivities will take place from Aug. 24-26.
“Players’ Weekend will showcase the personalities and interests of Major League players by allowing them to select a nickname for the back of their jersey as well as wear and use uniquely coloured and designed equipment including bats, spikes, batting gloves, wristbands, compression sleeves and catcher’s equipment,” a press release read.
MLB released the full list of player nicknames and the Toronto Blue Jays roster has a few strong offerings, including Curtis Granderson going with “Grandyman” and recently-acquired Ken Giles showing off his affinity for rhyming with “100 Miles Giles.”
Toronto still has some classics like “Bringer of Rain” and “Tulo” even though Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki aren’t playing. The “Joey Bats” era is over but Joe Biagini is still around, and he went with “Joe The Great.”
Marco Estrada moved on from “Estradabien” and his 2018 jersey will read “Estratosphere” instead. Kevin Pillar went with “Pill” on the back of his jersey in 2017 but this year he went with his “KP” initials. Marcus Stroman was “Stro-Show” a year ago but this year he’s gone with “HDMH,” an acronym for “height don’t measure heart.”
No Blue Jays player went all out the way Brad Boxberger did (we’re looking at you, Ryan Borucki and Sam Gaviglio). The Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher will have emojis spell out his name instead of letters.
