SEATTLE — Brian McCann will spend the New York Yankees’ off day on Thursday hoping an MRI provides an answer for why his right foot has become troublesome.
McCann and the Yankees hope the exam reveals no surprises.
"There’s always a concern. You get in an MRI tube and things can show up you don’t even know you have," New York manager Joe Girardi said. "That’s the bottom line. He’s been managing it for two weeks and playing pretty good so that’s kind of what I expect we’ll have to manage that for a while."
McCann left Wednesday’s 3-1 win over the Seattle Mariners in the second inning after the soreness in his right foot became too uncomfortable to continue. It’s an issue that McCann has been bothered by for about 10 days since first being hurt on May 24 at home against Texas. McCann underwent an X-ray that didn’t reveal anything significant, Girardi said, but is in enough discomfort that more tests are needed.
"It just comes up when I’m in my crouch, when I’m catching," McCann said.
Girardi said the pain has moved at times from McCann’s foot to his calf, but is definitely a foot problem. He said it got "really sore after that first inning," on Wednesday and McCann needed to be replaced by John Ryan Murphy. McCann grounded out in his only at-bat and is hitting .248 with eight homers and 33 RBIs this season.
"It just didn’t go away. It stayed in the bottom of my foot and went up into my calf to where I had a hard time putting weight on it," McCann said.
