Padres deny man in white was stealing signs

Check this out, as Cardinals coaching staff and catcher Yadier Molina ask the umpires to check into a suspicious looking man in white with binoculars.

It appears the sign-stealing controversy involving the San Diego Padres was a bit overblown.

During Sunday’s game against the Padres, St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina informed the home plate umpire about a man, who could be seen above the centre field wall, wearing a white polo shirt with binoculars.

Initially it appeared that the Cardinals were concerned about the Padres’ hitters stealing signs, but it was unclear what Molina said to the umpire. The catcher was not available to reporters after the game.

However, the Padres told The San Diego Union-Tribune Monday morning that the person Molina saw was part of the security team.

The Toronto Blue Jays were accused, years ago, of stealing signs via an unknown “man in white” in the outfield seats who was apparently tipping off hitters.

Nothing ever came of that accusation.
