The Toronto Blue Jays and closer Ken Giles have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $9.6-million contract on Friday.
Giles earned a $6.3 million salary in 2019 when he posted a 1.87 ERA with 23 saves in 53 games for the Blue Jays. Barring an extension, the 29-year-old’s slated to hit free agency following the 2020 season.
Earlier in the day, the Blue Jays avoided arbitration with Matt Shoemaker on a one-year, $4.2 million deal. The club has also avoided arbitration with Brandon Drury and Anthony Bass, their other two eligible players.
MLB teams had until Friday at 1 p.m. ET to exchange filing numbers with arbitration-eligible players.
