Report: Mets have ‘significant momentum’ in trade for Cano, Diaz

The Mariners and Mets are moving toward a blockbuster trade that would send Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz from Seattle to New York, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

There are some obstacles standing in the way of the trade, as the Mariners have not yet asked Cano to waive his no-trade clause. Passan does not expect it to be an issue and reports Cano would likely accept the move to New York. The teams must also go through the process of exchanging medical information.

Seattle has been actively engaged in Cano talks this off-season as it looks to unload the five years and $120 million remaining on the 36-year-old’s contract.

Cano served an 80-game suspension for the use of performance-enhancing drugs last season. In his 80 games played, he slashed .303/.374/.471 with 10 home runs.

Diaz emerged as one of baseball’s elite closers in 2018. The hard-throwing right-hander recorded a 1.96 ERA and an MLB-high 57 saves en route to his first career all-star appearance. He also posted an eye-popping 15.2 K/9 rate.

The Mariners’ potential return is still unclear, but The Athletic‘s Ken Rosenthal reports prospects Jarred Kelenic (outfield) and Justin Dunn (right-handed pitcher) are among those being discussed.
