Jays cut Ruiz to allow slugger a shot in Japan

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays have released first baseman Randy Ruiz and recalled outfielder Jeremy Reed to take his place on the 25-man roster.

Ruiz batted .150 with one home run and one RBI in 13 games this season. He has signed a contract with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of the Japan Pacific League.

Reed posted a .265 average with two homers and nine RBIs in 31 games with triple-A Las Vegas. He has a .250 average in two games this season with the Blue Jays.

Also Wednesday, Toronto activated left-hander Marc Rzepczynski from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Las Vegas. He broke his left middle finger during spring training.

Rzepczynski was 2-4 last season with a 3.67 earned-run average.
