The legend of the headline-grabbing cult hero Munenori Kawasaki continues to grow.
On Thursday, Sportsnet 590 The Fan’s Tim and Sid featured a song dedicated to Kawasaki, which was taken from this funky 1970s Kawasaki Motors commercial:
This new burst of Kawasaki love was all sparked by his game-winning three run ninth-inning hit in Wednesday night’s Blue Jays win over the Cleveland Indians. Kawasaki continued with his hilarity-filled post-game interview where he thanked the fans, his teammates and promised to see us all tomorrow in just slightly less than perfect English. In case you missed it, check it out here.
Wednesday night’s interview still doesn’t compare to Kawasaki’s now ubiquitous reaction after he hit a walkoff double capping a four-run comeback against the Baltimore Orioles on May 26, where he informed us all of where he was from. (For a refresher, check out the video here.)
The return of Jose Reyes from injury nearly marked the end of the Kawasaki era in Toronto after he was sent down to the minor leagues. But he was called back up to the team just two days later when Melky Cabrera was placed on the DL.
Through the 68 games that Kawasaki has played, he has proven he isn’t just a character. With an OBP of .319, a fielding percentage over .970, and the underappreciated ability to work deep into counts, he has been a notable contributor to an underperforming team.
