BAUTISTA LAUNCHER (SEPT. 22 VS. YANKEES)
The New York Yankees should think twice about ever running on Jose Bautista. In a key divisional matchup down the stretch, the Blue Jays right fielder first gunned out Dustin Ackley at third base with a laser from the outfield, then saved another potential run in the ninth inning with a no-bounce rocket to prevent Chris Young from scoring at home plate. With these two throws, Bautista put to rest any doubts about his lingering shoulder issue.
CURTAIN CALL (SEPT. 27 VS. RAYS)
Yes, we already have a Josh Donaldson Division, and a Going Yard one, too. But Bringer of Rain’s walk-off shot in Toronto’s final home game of the regular season was too big an exclamation point on the MVP debate to deny him a Wild Card spot. So. Clutch.
PILLAR GOES SPIDER-MAN (APR. 15 VS. RAYS)
Pillar scaled the 10-foot Rogers Centre outfield wall like your friendly neighbourhood superhero to save a home run from Tampa Bay’s Tim Beckham. Buck Martinez called it one of the best catches ever from a Blue Jays outfielder.
A DIVE FOR THE DOUBLE (APR. 21 VS. ORIOLES)
Not only does Pillar rob Baltimore’s Adam Jones of a base hit with an incredible diving catch, but then he makes a heads-up to throw to second to force a double play. Outfield defence at its finest!
CROWD SURFING (JUN. 24 VS. RAYS)
Josh Donaldson leaps into the stands with reckless abandon to make a spectacular catch and keep Marco Estrada’s bid for a perfect game alive in Tampa Bay. It wasn’t a perfect game in the end, but the leap into the crowd certainly was.
THE GREAT ESCAPE (SEPT. 2 VS. INDIANS)
Josh Donaldson shows his wild side on the base paths, running home on a shallow pop fly to right field. On a close play at home plate, Donaldson jumps past the catcher and just gets his hand on the plate to score. Check out the slow-motion replay to truly appreciate the athleticism.
HOME RUN HAT TRICK (AUG. 29 VS. TIGERS)
Not once, not twice, but thrice! Encarnacion’s three-HR, nine-RBI game was capped off with the grandest of grand slams and an extended delay as fans began throwing hats on the field. All indications from those in attendance point to it being one of the most special moments in Rogers Centre history.
DON’T PLAY WITH JOSE (APR. 21 VS. ORIOLES)
Three pitches after Jason Garcia threw behind Jose Bautista in the seventh inning of a game the Blue Jays were leading by seven runs, Joey Bats taught the Orioles rookie a lesson, smashing a 3-1 offering over the wall in left field. What followed was an epic bat flip, a slow trot around the bases and a filthy glare at the Baltimore dugout. So. Much. Swag.
Come back tomorrow to vote on the next head-to-head matchup.
