Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jamal Murray will headline the senior men's team training camp roster looking to help Canada reach the 2024 Paris Olympics at the FIBA World Cup.
All eighteen players have committed to both training camp and the World Cup should they make the roster.
Here is a look at all eighteen players headed to training camp in Toronto from Aug. 1-6.
Kyle Alexander, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, RJ Barrett, Trae Bell-Haynes, Oshae Brissett, Dillon Brooks, Lu Dort, Zach Edey, Melvin Ejim, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Cory Joseph, Jamal Murray, Kelly Olynyk, Kevin Pangos, Dwight Powell, Kassius Robertson, Phil Scrubb and Thomas Scrubb.
It may very well the most complete roster the Canadian men have ever put together.
Among the notable absences are youngsters Bennedict Mathurin and Shaedon Sharper as well as Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins.
After finishing qualification as the top team from the Americas with an 11-1 record, Canada will descend upon Jakarta, Indonesia, on Aug. 25 to begin a World Cup in which it will try to finish on the podium or at least top-two in the Americas in order to qualify outright for the Olympics.
Thirty different players suited up for the red and white during qualification, but only 12 will make the trip to Asia for the World Cup. In fact, Team Canada is going to look radically different than the last time it appeared in a World Cup in 2019, when it had just two NBA players, Cory Joseph and Khem Birch.
Leading Canada is new head coach Jordi Fernandez who took over for former Toronto Raptors coach Nick Nurse.
Fernandez recently completed his first season as associate head coach with the Sacramento Kings, where he helped guide the team to a 48-34 record — their best regular season since 2004-05. He spent the previous six seasons as an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets.
Internationally, Fernandez was the lead assistant for the Nigerian men’s national team at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Fernandez will lead Canada into this summer's World Cup and is also expected to remain in place should Canada qualify for next year's Paris Olympics.
The FIBA World Cup will be held Aug. 25 to Sept. 10 in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.
