Just over a week ago, Kaelynn Satterfield left Leon, Mexico after a defeat to Canada in the bronze medal game of the FIBA Women's AmeriCup and headed to Toronto.
The second time she appeared in a bronze medal game this month, she made sure she was taking home hardware, and Puerto Rico did just that in a 77-67 win over BAL Select Women on the final day of GLOBL JAM action.
Puerto Rico led by as many as five early, but BAL Select showed one of their finest offensive performances in GLOBL JAM yet as they scored 20 first quarter points to lead by three.
Aicha Dia led the charge with eight points while Yara Hussein added seven, combining for 15 of their team's total points in the quarter.
Nairimar Vargas and Kaelynn Satterfield both tipped in four points as Trinity Sam Antonio controlled play from the point with Puerto Rico taking a well-rounded approach to their scoring.
Puerto Rico stayed close by winning the rebound battles slightly, but BAL Select was shooting 53 per cent to keep their lead.
Satterfield continued with six more points as Vargas and Mariah Perez both added four points each, but Puerto Rico's offence could not stop Dia and Divine Dibula as both teams scored 21 points in the quarter to keep it a three-point affair.
BAL Select capitalized off Puerto Rico turning the ball over and also used their size and athleticism in the paint to get their points.
But Puerto Rico turned on their offensive prowess in the third quarter, outscoring BAL Select 16-8 and reclaiming the lead they had found early in the game.
Satterfield and Vargas pushed on the boards getting in the paint against BAL Select down low, while San Antonio continued to use her court vision to create open shots for her team dishing 10 dimes by the end of the third quarter.
"We really had the mindset, we know from the beginning of the game that we wanted to go home with the win and that's exactly what we did," said Satterfield.
Despite their struggles to get shots in the net in the third quarter, Dia still led BAL Select offensively with the help of Fatou Diakite.
In the fourth quarter Puerto Rico had their best showing yet, going off for 23 points as Satterfield shot 53 per cent from the field for eight points in the quarter to finish with 20.
She added nine rebounds and four assists, dominating on all sides of the ball to help lift Puerto Rico to lead by as many as 10 in the final frame of action.
BAL Select did not go down without pushing, as Sauda Issa Ntaconayigize added nine fourth quarter points to keep cutting into Puerto Rico's lead.
But Puerto Rico became more aggressive in the paint, scoring 36 points from down low in the win, and flustered BAL Select to continue to get the ball back.
Their bench depth was key as Satterfield, Vargas and Perez all finished with at least 12 points in the win, and while San Antonio may not have scored many baskets, she certainly created them for her teammates with 11 assists.
Adryana Quezada's seven points off the bench in the final quarter helped to seal the win for Puerto Rico.
Dia led BAL Select with 17 points, while Hussein dominated on the glass with 13 rebounds.
This time around, Satterfield is heading home with some hardware to show for her hard work.
"Even though it was with the older team, we still placed fourth, and here we were able to play as higher so it's just a great accomplishment for the country," said Satterfield.
