New Toronto Raptors point guard Dennis Schroder helped Germany hold off a comeback attempt by the Canadian men's national team Wednesday as the Germans picked up an 86-81 win in an exhibition game.
This was both teams' first tune-up game ahead of the upcoming FIBA World Cup.
Canada started slow, trailing the more experienced German squad 27-14 after the opening quarter.
But young guards Luguentz Dort and Nickeil Alexander-Walker sparked a valiant comeback attempt by the Canadians in the second half.
Canada had the game tied 79-79 with a minute remaining before Schroder orchestrated a 7-0 run for Germany to close out the game.
The Canadians' next exhibition match will take place on Saturday when they take on New Zealand. Canada will then travel to Spain for a two-game exhibition series on Aug. 17-18 with Spain and Dominican Republic.
Canada is in Group H of the FIBA World Cup which begins on Aug. 25. The Canadians will face France on Aug. 25 to kick off tournament play. Lebanon and Latvia round out Canada's group.
