Andrew Wiggins has hops. We knew this already.
Wiggins’ explosive leaping ability is just one of the reasons he was the NBA’s top overall pick two years ago, and it’s part of why he’s a bona fide star in the making in Minnesota and a major piece of an ultra-athletic Timberwolves’ core that also features Class of 2030 Hall of Famer Karl-Anthony Towns and two-time defending dunk contest champ Zach LaVine.
Turns out we may have underestimated Young Grasshopper.
Spending some off-season time in Toronto, Wiggins put his other-worldly athleticism on display during a workout session at his alma matter, Vaughn Secondary School. The video comes courtesy older brother Nick, a standout at Wichita State University. And it should be replayed multiple times to get a full appreciation:
Good golly Miss Molly! He came thiiiiiiis close to cramming the 720 dunk. Turns out catching lobs from Marcus Stroman was but a mere appetizer for the 21 year-old.
The youngest player on the NBA’s Top 20 list of scorers last season, Wiggins averaged 20.7 points per game in his sophomore season while starting all 81 games he appeared in for Minnesota. With new head coach Tom Thibodeau behind the bench and an exciting young nucleus that has expanded to include 4th overall pick Kris Dunn at point guard, the Timberwolves’ are one of the NBA’s most promising up-and-coming clubs, and should be a mandatory League Pass team for basketball fans across the country.
Wiggins drew ire from some Canadian basketball fans when he decided to skip the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament last month, stating that he wanted to focus on his upcoming third NBA season and putting in work in the gym. If these are the kinds of results it yields, maybe that’ll help ease the pain.
Hey, while we’re still here, let’s check out Wiggins’ finest dunk work from the 2015-16 season:
