When it was announced back in September that Drake would be taking on the role of “global ambassador” for the Toronto Raptors, it wasn’t overly obvious what that meant. Well, on Saturday night Raptors fans will get their first real look, when Toronto hosts the Brooklyn Nets for ‘Drake Night’.
Every fan in attendance will receive a commemorative black and gold t-shirt with the team’s logo on the front and the October’s Very Own (OVO) owl logo on the back. OVO posted pictures of the shirt on Thursday.
It’s been confirmed that the Toronto-born rapper will be in attendance for the game, which will also feature a halftime set by OVO DJ Future the Prince.
Despite their recent upswing, the Raptors remain in the middle of the pack when it comes to attendance. The Air Canada Centre ranks 13th in average attendance at 17,800, but ‘Drake Night’ and the team’s improved performance should result in an increase in those numbers.
Drake’s role with MLSE looks to be a flexible one. He’s already been pictured at games wooing Toronto FC transfer targets and he will reportedly play a part in the rebranding of the Raptors.
The Raptors were reportedly considering changing the team’s colour scheme to black and gold which would line up with Drake’s OVO brand.
In addition to the free shirt and entertainment, Saturday’s divisional matchup is an important one; the Nets have won four games in a row and are 3.5 games back of the Raptors.
