Delon Wright‘s agent is heading to Toronto for last-minute meetings this weekend to see if an extension can be worked out with the Raptors, according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe.

The 26-year-old and the organization have until Oct. 15 to come to an agreement, after which Wright will go about playing the final year of his rookie deal and then become a restricted free agent as long as the Raptors do their part and tender him a qualifying offer.

Selected 20th overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, Wright became an integral part of one of the best bench units in the entire league last season, averaging eight points, 2.9 assists, 2.9 rebounds and a steal in just under 21 minutes per game.

He played in a career-high 69 games as well last season after battling shoulder issues in the past. As is the case with the rest of the Bench Mob — as they came to be known — Wright’s numbers did not reflect the value he brought to the team.

Much of what the reserves gave Toronto last season was about how they combined as a unit, rather than any one individual carrying the lineup. Wright’s ability as a playmaker on offence as well as being able to guard three positions defensively made him a valuable contributor on both ends of the floor.

One aspect of Wright’s individual game that did notably improve last season was his three-point shooting, converting on 36.6 per cent of his 153 attempts.

The Raptors begin their season on Oct. 17 against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Scotiabank Arena.
