When the Toronto Raptors traded for Kawhi Leonard, detractors of the deal used the fact he will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and has already reportedly expressed interest in heading back to his hometown of Los Angeles to spell eventual doom.
To the naysayers, the risk wasn’t worth it, no matter how well the team’s performed.
And if a real-estate investment can tell you anything, then it looks like those who would’ve preferred the Raptors to act more prudently just got as good an excuse as any to say, “I told you so.”
On Thursday, it was reported by the Los Angeles Times’ Neal J. Leitereg that Leonard had recently purchased a $13.3 million home in Rancho Santa Fe, an affluent community in San Diego.
Granted, San Diego isn’t L.A., but he did go to school at San Diego State and it’s still property in Southern California, so, if you’re looking to read the tea leaves here, it might play a factor in the decision he’ll have to make at the end of the season.
On the other hand, to think that a multi-million-dollar athlete from close to the area wants to own property in Southern California shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone, either.
Like everything else with Leonard’s will-he-stay-or-will-he-go narrative that has been ongoing — and will continue to drag on — him buying a house in San Diego could mean everything or nothing at all, just as him buying a home in Toronto did.
Simply put, no one knows what he’s thinking other than himself.
