Former WNBA star Maya Moore has married Jonathan Irons, the man she helped free from a wrongful conviction earlier this year.

Moore and Irons announced the news in an interview with “Good Morning America” Wednesday while on the show to discuss their “Get Out The Vote” campaign.

“We wanted to announce today that we are super excited to continue the work that we’ve been doing together, but doing it as a married couple,” Moore said. “We’re excited to share this new chapter of life together.”

Irons was sentenced to 50 years in prison in 1998 after being convicted for the shooting of a Missouri homeowner. Moore met Irons through a prison ministry program when she was 18 and the two became friends. In February 2019, Moore paused her WNBA career to commit to fighting for Irons’ freedom, which he was granted in March. Irons walked out of prison on July 1 and proposed to Moore shortly after.

Moore is one of the most decorated WNBA players of all-time, winning four championships with the Minnesota Lynx and the league MVP award in 2014. When asked Wednesday if she will ever return to the court, the 31-year-old said she’s currently focused on the fight for social justice and hasn’t made a decision about playing yet.

“I am trying to really just breathe from this long, long battle,” Moore said. “There’s a lot of unknowns for a lot of us right now. So I’m still in that camp.”
