The Toronto Argonauts signed quarterback Bryan Scott on Monday, bringing in some help ahead of the Grey Cup.
The move comes days after starting quarterback Chad Kelly suffered a fractured tibia and fibula in the East final against the Montreal Alouettes.
Scott returns to Toronto after dressing in nine games with the team before being released to accommodate Kelly's return from suspension. He was signed to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers practice roster before getting cut on Sept. 16.
“We couldn’t put him on the practice roster, and we also can’t keep four quarterbacks,” Argonauts head coach Dinwiddie said about the decision to release Scott earlier in the year. “The salary cap was also involved in that decision as well. Bryan did some good stuff for us, and we still believe in him. I mentioned to him today that I wouldn’t be shocked if we tried to bring him back at some point.”
The 29-year-old only made one appearance in the regular season, completing all five pass attempts for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Dinwiddie announced after the game Saturday that quarterback Nick Arbuckle would be the team's starter for the Grey Cup.
Cameron Dukes will be the team's backup heading into the game. Teams are allowed to have 45 players dressed in a game, including a maximum of three quarterbacks.
Toronto is no stranger to quarterback injuries in the Grey Cup, with starting quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson suffering a dislocated thumb in the fourth quarter in 2022. Kelly would come in for Bethel-Thompson in relief and lead the Argonauts to a comeback win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
