The Toronto Argonauts will head to Vancouver looking to win a Grey Cup without starting quarterback Chad Kelly.
Kelly suffered a broken ankle during the East final against the Montreal Alouettes when defensive end Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund landed on his right leg while the quarterback was running with the ball.
The Argonauts quarterback attempted to walk after getting up but went back on the ground holding his leg. Kelly was taken off the field on a stretcher and transported to hospital for imaging.
In a statement released by Kelly Sunday night, the quarterback confirmed that he sustained fractures to both his tibia and fibula and had surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery within the next three to six months, but a more defined timeline will be updated after 12 weeks.
"I want to extend my sincere thanks to the doctors and medical staff at Montreal General Hospital, as well as my family, teammates and team ownership, for standing by me through this experience," Kelly said. "The incredible outpouring of support from our fans means the world to me. I couldn't be prouder of our team for securing an outstanding win and I'm thrilled we're headed to the Grey Cup.
"While I regret not being able to play. I have full confidence in the team and staff to bring the Cup home where it belongs. Thank you again for the incredible support. I'll see you all soon."
Kelly was 11-of-22 for 182 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions prior to his injury. He appeared in nine games this season after serving a nine-game suspension for violating the league’s gender-based violence policy, throwing for 2,451 yards, 10 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He also rushed for 214 yards and five touchdowns.
The Argonauts held on to beat Montreal 30-28 to move on to the Grey Cup where they will face the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a rematch of the 2022 championship game.
