Following three weeks of pre-season games (which begin Sunday, May 23), the league will make its return with an opening night matchup between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers — a rematch of the 2019 Grey Cup.
That was the last CFL game played, given that the 2020 season was cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’re looking forward to hosting our comeback season in our stadiums, in front of our fans,” Randy Ambrosie, commissioner of the CFL, said in a league statement. “With this schedule, we’re signalling that we’re looking forward with optimism to playing in 2021.”
There are no details currently available on how fans will be accommodated at future CFL games.
“As we look forward to a new season, we are encouraged by the reports about vaccines, treatments and rapid testing in the news,” Ambrosie said. “We will continue to work with our local public health authorities in 2021. We thank our fans, partners and broadcasters for their continuing support and look forward to enjoying great Canadian football with them.”
After 21 weeks of games, the CFL playoffs are scheduled to begin Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021 with the regional semi-finals. The Grey Cup will be awarded on Nov. 21 of that year at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ont.
