The Ottawa Redblacks will be without starting quarterback Jeremiah Masoli for the first two games of the 2023 CFL regular season, it was announced Tuesday.
Masoli confirmed the news to Postmedia's Tim Baines.
"It sucks," Masoli told Baines. "You can hang your head and feel bad about it or you can make the decision to be positive and look at the glass half full. With my teammates in the locker room, I’m good."
Masoli started the 2022 season for the Redblacks before suffering a season-ending leg injury in their Week 5 contest against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The injury occurred on a late hit from Roughriders defensive tackle Garrett Marino, who was then suspended four games for the hit.
The 34-year-old signal caller threw for 1,083 yards and two touchdowns before his season was cut short.
Quarterback Nick Arbuckle is expected to get the start for the Redblacks' first two games in place of Masoli. Ottawa starts its season on the road against the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday, before hosting the Calgary Stampeders in Week 2.
The Redblacks acquired Arbuckle from the Edmonton Elks last year after Masoli's season-ending injury. Arbuckle threw for 2,400 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games for Ottawa last season.
With Masoli on the sidelines, Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros is the only opening-day starter from 2022 that will be on the field for the same team in a season opener this year.
