Report: Saskatchewan Roughriders add QB Trey Lance to negotiation list

Could Trey Lance try to get his professional football career back on track in Canada?

The quarterback, currently a free agent in the NFL, has been added to the Saskatchewan Roughriders' negotiation list, Justin Dunk of 3DownNation reported Wednesday.

CFL teams can claim exclusive rights for up to 45 players by placing them on their negotiation list.

Picked third overall by the San Francisco 49ers out of North Dakota State in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lance has struggled to gain traction in the U.S. league.

Lance was named the 49ers' starter to open the 2022 season, but suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2.

The dual-threat QB made four starts in two years for the 49ers before he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys prior to the 2023 season for a fourth-round pick. He didn't see the field in 2023 before appearing in four games for the Cowboys in 2024, making one start in the season finale for an eliminated Dallas team.

Lance, 24, has a career 2-3 record as am NFL starter, completing 56.6 per cent of his passes with five touchdowns and four interceptions.

Lance had a decorated, albeit short, career at North Dakota State, which plays in the second tier of college football in the U.S. He won two Football Championship Subdivision titles (one as starter) and won the Walter Payton Award as top offensive player in the FCS in 2019.

CFL veteran Trevor Harris, 38, is Saskatchewan's starter. Former Calgary Stampeders starter Jake Maier likely is No. 2 on the depth chart.

Lance's father, Carlton, played 13 games with the Roughriders as a defensive back in 1993.
